As hedge funds are not required to register with SEC, there are very few sources for research on performance, size, investments, numbers, managers, etc. Any service that follows the industry, like Hedge Fund Research (HFR) are very costly for subscriptions. There are no available services that are reliable enough to employ for academic research.
