The S&P uses GICS Global Industry Classification System to designate the constituent companies primary industry and sub industry and to organize them up to macro sectors.

If weightings within a sector stay consistently larger or smaller than they should, S&P Index committee will add or delete companies from the index to maintain weighting consistency.
